Miniature Dachshund, Canal Longboats, and Teeth

Day 26 Walking
Llangollen to Trefonen
15.80 miles, but the route Lois took added another 3-4
7.5 hours

BILLY ELLIOT on BBC 4.  I remember trying to see it in London when it first came out, and they wouldn't let Olivia in because she was TOO young, even though she was with her parents.  Great film!  Especially when Billy is grown up and does that final Leap out onto the stage as a SWAN!!  Still brings amazement to me.

The grannie, "I could have been a dancer".  -  Lois, "I wish I had the opportunity".

Yesterday something funky was going on with the teeth.  One felt strange. Sort of like it was higher and not strong.  Thought it was the expensive crown that was misbehaving.  No, it wasn't.

Tooth broke off at breakfast!  It was the one next to the crown.  Doesn't hurt, yet.  Hope that will continue for another two weeks. Would rather just have this one removed as its position is so far back a crown of gems would never be seen.

Not a fan of chocolate first thing in the morning, but when offered a croissant with that in it - well, no question - it was eaten.

This toast has a window.

School kids walking to class in Llangollen.

This house is built right on the towpath.

Nicely tied rope in front of longboat.

Met a couple who were camping along the canal. They had two kayaks with them and were going up the canal, down that waterfall I photographed yesterday, connecting to River Dee, and on down to Chester. They were camping the entire way.

Talked with a man who has been living on his boat for  26 years.  Works on shore and uses his bike to get to the location where his car is parked. Goes abroad in February to warmer lands. Madeira. India. Spain. Africa   Has TV antenna because he like his shows. It is possible to follow the waterways all over Britain. Different areas along the canal had different rules for tying up and mooring.  Crowded areas a few was required (think parking lots), other areas were free but had a 48 hour limit.  Others 14 days. There were also places that seemed to be more like a permanent (trailer park).

Talked with another boat owner who had solar panels on the roof.  Asked about them. They work great.  Keep the refrigerator running, the ice and gin cold.

Had decided early on that today I was going to follow the canals rather than climb way up high and see more sheep. It was good. Chatted all morning with people cruising along in the longboats. I walked faster then they puttered along. Many opportunities to exchange greetings and other comments.

Eventually these feet would move forward and away from the longboat.  Soon another would approach coming the other direction. When two would meet if it was narrow. One would have to pull over and wait. If slightly wider they could pass, as the passing was so close they could easily have passed a cup of coffee over.

Saw a jogger running along towpath and later saw him waiting for his longboat to catch up. Often people would get out of a longboat as it was moving and walk along side on the tow path.

The two long tunnels were  creepy.  Pitch black inside with the tiny light at the end. There was a railing but it couldn't been seen.  The hand just kept moving along the railing and the feet forward. Sort of like going through the tunnels on the Elroy Sparta bike trail.  Boats have to have a headlight.  Lois had no headlight.  Lois met bikers.  Bikers and Lois did an odd dance of passing on the narrow path (hand to slightly bend head).  Between their bikes which they were walking, and Lois walking with a bulky pack.  It was interesting.

Passed one boat and when I glanced inside the open door in the front a man was sitting without a shirt on. First thing I noticed was a Giant TUMMY.

Nice to have a semi well stocked cookie canister.

Most beautiful and tasty tuna on brown bread with salad (no real dressing) with Sparkling water.

It is just called Brown Sauce. Not sure what it is, but people put it on everything. I tried it and thought it nasty.

Miniature Dachshund named Henry, 8 weeks old, was at the cafe.

Baby named Johnty short for Jonathan sat in his pram at my table.  His grandmother was watching him for the day.  She pushed him up to my table and asked if she could sit on the other side.  Of course.  Then she left the baby in the pram at the table and went inside to order.  Baby just sat there and smiled at me.

Baby Johnty (Jonathan).

Recognize tree photographed when going in other direction while walking through another Very Dark woods.  The tree tops are so dense that no sunlight get in there at all. Very strange.

Intense back pain. Considered bus ride.  Got myself to a town with the intention of taking a bus to my destination.  Arrived there.  No bus. Took two Aleve and considered also the Tramadol.  Decided against that extra dose. Stretched out flat on the back on some ground and after a bit the muscles settled down.  Nothing else to do but get up and start walking.  Finally the pain became less and the last hour or so went by.

One of the longboat drivers chatted for quite a while with me as I kept pace with the boat. He knew where Wisconsin was because he once had taken a group on a boat ride who where in Wales did the Choir competition.  He couldn't remember which town they were from though.

Sheep under the same tree.  The first time I thought they were seeking shelter from the rain. Today I thought from the sun.  Possibly it is just "their" tree and they hang out there.

Back to the hedgehog house.

The light was different today and when I crouched down to look inside was rather startled to see a hedgehog in there.  The realized the animal is permanently stuck in that house.  Sure would have been nice to see a live one!

The other couple who is staying here have come up from the south on Offa's Dyke and didn't arrive until 6:30.  They had a long day.

Chose the bed with the stuffed owl.

Scampi with over cooked veggies (broccoli, cauliflower, onions, and mostly cabbage).  Tried one of the potatoes.

Tonight's host's husband (didn't catch his name) drove me to three places trying to find food.  On Mondays the local place within walking distance is closed.  The first 2 we went to were open only for beverages.  Finally located a White Lion that was serving food.

My driver is handicapped and uses crutches like people with polio did.  So every in and out of the car was an ordeal.

I asked about the crutches and if he has been using them for a long time.  Yes.  He has had three total hip replacements on each side. At first I was confused and thought he had extras limbs, then realized that each hip had been replaced three times.  He also has both knees replaced, and a shoulder replacement.  Felt sorry for the guy.  Must have been painful for him.
