Montgomery Canal and the Swan Families

Day 27 Walking
Trefonen to Buttington
16.30 miles plus 3
8 hours

More Brown Sauce

Benedict eggs Florentine with a very LARGE mound of spinach.  Not on the traditional "English" muffin, but with a croissant on the side.

Important reminder:  secure the nozzle/cover on the CamelBak water bladder.  Filled the bladder and then stood it up inside pack where it belongs.  Put the pack on the bed, on its back, to load things into bottom compartment.  Lifted pack to stand upright to fill the top compartment.  Water came pouring over everything!

Good thing it was noticed as the plastic bags were being packed.  Grab all the towels in the room.  Soaked up the mess.  No clothing items were even affected as everything was snuggled snug in zip-lock bags.

Even worse would have been to not have drinking water on this long, sunny (at least it was this morning) day.

Oh oh, realized that the missing water had soaked into the Down comforter.  More soaking up water with towels.  Draped the comforter over edge of bed in the sun.  By the time breakfast was over the wetness was mostly dampness.   Lois quickly departed.

Kept finding peacock feathers in one area.

Hee Haa

Golf course in the very top of a high high mountain. Learned that all the members went together and bought the club.  After that they didn't allow sheep to graze on the pretty lawns, and hikers have to follow a path that skirts the greens and kept dipping down into the woods.

Couple at breakfast started at Knighton and are only doing the north half of Offa's Dyke.  They were struggling to walk.   Sat down often yesterday and took long breaks.  That was why they didn't arrive until 6:30.  Only training they did was one 12 mile walk.  Unprepared people.

To use the stile or not.  Not. Chose to walk next to it through the space that formerly must have had a fence.

Chicken inside a fence watching life move about on the street.  Or, chicken resigned to always giving up eggs.  Or, maybe this chicken is waiting to have its neck wrung for the soup pot.  Or, maybe this chicken is a boy and he is waiting for a cute chick.

Serpent branch

Met a man on the canal path and we chatted a bit. Turned out he not only knew where Wisconsin was, but had spent three weeks at UW-Eau Claire studying the system of charging tuition as Britain was in the process of switching over to charging students.  He is Vice Chancellor at the University of Winchester.

Swan Family A.

The top of the bridge is very close to the head.  Good thing this walker is not any taller.

Swan Family B.

Beautiful tortoise cat dead by side of road. Did not take a photo.  Cats are too precious to be neutral about.

Swan Family C.

...and there goes father.

Long day of walking.  Could have called my hosts for a ride from Buttington, but decided to just walk to Tynllwyn Farm.  Probably should have called. Those last three miles were toughies.

Swan Family D.

Swan Family E.

Mother is still in the near fr last week.

Father out for a swim and keeping a close eye, and sharp beak ready for predictors.

Jane greeted me at The Farm and led the way to my old room.  The one with the red chaise lounge covered in velvet.  Welcome back to Downton Abbey.

Belles that are bells.

Chicken with mushrooms, broccoli, cauliflower, mashed potatoes (of course) and Broad Beans.  Very good after another day of only cookies (nothing was open along the way - Tuesday must be their day off).

Sticky Toffee Pudding, which is not a pudding at all but a steaming hot moist date cake with a toffee and cream sauce on top, which is also hot.  And one scoop of ice cream. She was going to put two on, but I can get along with out ice cream.
